Dukagjin (Albanian definite form: Dukagjini) is a village in the former municipality of Malzi in Kukës County, Albania. At the 2015 local government reform it became part of the municipality Kukës.[1]

Etymology

Unlike many other villages in the area, Dukagjin is not mentioned in any of the three Ottoman defters in the 16th century. It was first mentioned in 1638 by Frang Bardhi, with its present name. The name of the village is derived from the Albanian noble family of the Dukagjini from the Middle Ages.[2]

In his account of his travels in Albania in 1867, Albanologist Johann Georg von Hahn states that the locals informed him of the existence of a castle in the area dedicated to Lekë Dukagjini, the last heir of this family. Legend has it that he was once besieged in this castle by Ottoman forces, but managed to escape capture after seeking advice from his brother on how to leave the castle unnoticed. However, the castle, or at least its ruins, could not be found.[3]
