Burns City is an unincorporated community in Cooke County, Texas, United States.^[1] According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 61 in 2000. It is located within the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.

History

Burns City was founded in 1881 when a man surnamed Burns discovered mineral water from a well near his home. As a result, he wanted to turn the area into a health resort as he was convinced that the water in the 40 ft. well would heal people. He built a hotel with 16 rooms that soon became the town square. A Masonic lodge was built in the square in 1882, and two years later, the residents of the community voted to incorporate it. A post office was established at Burns City in 1884 and remained in operation until 1907. A flour mill and cotton gin were opened over the next few years. The community had 300 residents served by eight businesses in 1890, although the hotel closed by the middle of the decade. The population went below 100 by the 1920s, in which it was at 25 in 1956 and 75 in 1968. Burns City had New Hope Church and several scattered homes in the 1970s. The population was recorded as 61 from the early 1970s through 2000.^[2]

Geography

Burns City is located on Farm to Market Road 372, 15 mi (24 km) southeast of Gainesville in southeastern Cooke County.^[2]

Education

Today, Burns City is served by the Valley View Independent School District.
